HEALTH BENEFITS OF TEA

I am a tea drinker it’s true. I even at one point had an entire cupboard devoted to housing all my different teas that I collected from grocery stores, and markets all over. I’ve since moved and my cupboard space is sparse at best, and  as a result I’ve had to stream line just a little. Now I have a shelf (or maybe two) of tea, but I do try to make it all the way through them before purchasing more.
Whether you’re tired, sick, or hungry teas can assist in a multitude of different “aliments”, but it can be difficult to remember which one to have when.

There’s an abundance of teas out there, but I’ve put together a small list of a few common ones, and their benefits to help you choose which is appropriate.

GREEN TEA

Okay where do we even begin with this guy? Seriously such an amazing tea for its antioxidants, and metabolism boosting properties.  Did you know that green tea actually helps you burn calories? All you need to do is drink it! Crazy right?

But don’t go overboard otherwise you’ll probably have a Jessie Spano melt down from all the caffeine. Think about this way 6 cups of green tea is like 3 cups of coffee, and don’t let the tea steep too long or it’ll be even stronger.

A great tip to for avoiding brewing bitter green tea is to not pour boiling water over the tea because it’ll burn the tea leaves. Instead I usually but an ice cube or two in my mug, with the tea bag, and then add the water to temper it down a notch it also allows you to drink it right away! Ain’t nobody got time for that.

Also no milk in your green tea (I might yuck anyway) but I see a lot of you folks do it, but stop it! When you add milk you cancel out all the good properties, so save it for your coffee where it actually helps to protect your teeth.

PASSION FLOWER
If you’re feeling a little bananas and your mind is GOING GOING GOING all the time you better make friends with this tea. Passionflower tea is great to supress your nervous system without making you feel tired meaning it just takes everything down a notch of two so you can actually think like a rational human being. I can only usually find this guy at whole foods stores or health food stores in a loose leaf tea ๐Ÿ™‚ If you’re local they sell it at The Organic Earth Market (used to be Planet Organic).
CHAMOMILE
You can enjoy this tea anytime of the day, but know that it can have sedative effects, meaning it will help to calm your nerves, but it can also make you a little sleepy.  Combine this guy with Valerian tea and you got yourself a nice little night cap that should send you into la la land in no time flat.
GINGER
Ginger is a natural anti-nauseant so if you’re feeling like you’re going to ralph this guy is your friend. Clearly if you’re puking up your insides you might want to explore that further with something more than tea, but if saw for instance you’re feeling a little off from a car ride ginger tea is a great option.
PEPPERMINT
Naturally decaffeinated this tea is great to have after a meal, and especially so if you’ve over done it, or maybe you’ve eaten something your stomach does agree with.  Peppermint tea is great for bloated tummies, and pairs well with green tea as well to perk you up in the morning. Sometimes I find green tea in the morning can make me feel a little nauseous, but I find the peppermint really tends to level it all out.
ROOIBOS
Naturally decaffeinated this tea is great to have in the evening especially after dinner if you’re still feeling like you need just a little something extra. Rather than raid your snack cupboard that can sabotage your healthy eating goals try having a warm cup of rooibos tea and it’ll satistify your craving for something sweet.

I love tea! I can't drink anything with caffeine in it but luckily there are tons of yummy herbal and rooibos options for me.
