Bow Tie

Fashion Friday
It’s that time of the week again; time to get your fabulous fashion fix before you head into the weekend. Every Friday Short Presents features a fashion and beauty related blog post, from inspirational outfit ideas to in-depth look at trends spotted directly on the runway. I read a lot of fashion blogs, and watch a lot of Fashion Television and I just write about when I like what I see. Today’s Fashion Friday look of the day is The Knotty Bow Tie

When invited to a friend’s 30th Birthday Party with a suggestion to dress elderly, I naturally felt inclined to sport a bow tie. I wanted to wear high waisted trousers with my look, but it was just too hot to do so; so I wore the over-sized white shirt, fitted black shorts, high heels, and of course the bow. There’s something about a bow tie to me that is just SO appealing to me these days.

I think it all started when I was checking out The Buckers Festival in Downtown Halifax I noticed a man wearing a tan colored suit, blue dress shirt and a fabulous bow tie and let’s just an obsession was born.

Now properly pulling off a bow tie is tricky, there’s a fine line between dorky, and clown, and think this is in direct relation to the suit it is paired with and the size of the bow.
Too big = clown and too small = dork. So in order to pull off the bow tie it needs to be proportionate to the suit, and the collar of the shirt. You wouldn’t buy a beautiful dress and then throw on costume jewelry, so when you are wearing a well tailored suit, it calls for an elegant tie.

Clearly, I would not expect anyone to take me seriously in the bow tie sported above, but given the right shirt, and the right size bow; it could totally work. Check these ladies who are pulling it off.

I am also loving the shirts with bows already built in: so chic

I think that us girls can get a away with a bigger bow, without looking like a clown, but for guys I think it needs to be proportionate to the shirt/suit style. Remember ladies to add in feminine elements to embrace your femininity and balance out your masculine look; no boyfriend wants to look like they are looking in a mirror.  To add a little edge pair your bow tie with a full skirt, or slouchy belted shorts (shirt tucked in), or a shirt that is a fun print like poke-a-dot.

Happy Friday,

I think this is such a fun look – I'm working out how to incorporate it into my outfits too. There was quite a bit of tuxedo – fashion on the recent catwalks, so we shall see if more bow ties appear this winter!
