There are 1,440 minutes in a day. That’s 1,440 opportunities to take some time for yourself, and yet it seems to be the first thing to fall by the wayside.
We are SO busy just trying to survive the day and ultimately living for everyone else. What we don’t realize is that when we do take time for ourselves, we are that much more equipped to handle what life throws our way, not to mention it just makes life more fun!
We are driven, we are all about the #hustle and #grind, and to be honest I’m not even sure we actually understand the notion of work-life balance anymore, let alone practice it! We’ve all been there and when you’re burning the candle at both ends, burnout is nothing but inevitable.
I wouldn’t wish burnout on anyone which is why I’ve partnered with my friends at SunRype for today’s post and we want to encourage you to #Take10!
Inspired by their SunRype Slim low-cal bevy (and new Pink Grapefruit Flavour), they want to inspire you to Take 10, because whether it’s 10 minutes or 10 seconds, it’s so important to take time for yourself and live your best life! The super yummy SunRype Slim beverages only have only 10 calories per serving (250ml), and contain no aspartame, no artificial flavours or colours (available in the non-refrigerated juice aisle of your grocery store).
REASONS TO #TAKE10
No matter where we are in our personal health journey, we all could use a reminder to #Take10! I’ve compiled a short list (bc ain’t nobody got time) of why it’s important to take time for yourself, as well as some ideas to help you get started.
1. IT’LL CLEAR + REFRESH YOUR MIND
“FIND A JOB YOU LOVE AND YOU’LL NEVER WORK A DAY IN YOUR LIFE”
We see this quote everywhere and I’m here to tell you that it’s your one-way ticket to Burnout Ville, party of one! Regardless of how much you LOVE your job you need time away. It’s still a job at the end of the day and it will always have responsibilities, so proper breaks are CRUCIAL. Let me say it louder for the folks in the back. TAKING BREAKS ARE CRUCIAL.
2. YOU WILL FEEL MORE INSPIRED AND MOTIVATED
If you’re feeling like you’re constantly dragging your feet you’re likely inching towards burnout, so taking some time for yourself (even just a quick ten minutes) will leave you feeling inspired and motivated to take on the rest of your day.
3. YOU WILL BE SO MUCH MORE PRODUCTIVE
There’s so much research to suggest that we can’t be productive every second of the day. I mean think about grade school at least the students get a recess and a lunch break.
4. YOU WILL LEARN TO TRUST AND SETTLE INTO DELEGATING MORE
I get it, it’s REALLY difficult to relinquish control, but here’s the thing: it gets easier the more you do it, and everyone has their own set of skills where you might just find that passing the torch ends up benefiting you. Remember as well that when you’re always the one in control, you’re not giving those around you the opportunity to grow. When you trust others, you also give them confidence, so it’s really a win/win.
5. YOU WILL RECONNECT WITH YOUR WHY
When you’re up to your elbows in emails, and deadlines, it’s really easy to lose track of your why. Taking some time away from the hustle and grind can allow you to reconnect with why you’re doing all of this in the first place. It sounds counter intuitive, but think about when you’re painting a picture at some point you need to take a step back to get a good look at the bigger picture. I think the same is true with any project.
10 WAYS TO HIT THE RESET BUTTON AND #TAKE10
Now that we’ve connected with all the benefits let’s chat about some ways you can get started RIGHT NOW!
1. Stretch
We all know we should do it, but it’s one of those things that tends to fall by the wayside. We know it makes us feel better, so next time you’re sitting at your desk and you feel like it’s been a while since you’ve gotten up and moved around, take ten minutes to stretch your neck or your hips! Just a few little stretches can make all the difference.
2. Read a book or magazine
I love having a book of poetry nearby, or even a magazine because it’s something that you can pick up and flip through at any time without a lot of commitment. Toss one in your bag and next time you’re waiting for a friend to meet up, or when waiting for an appointment choose your book or magazine over your ever distracting and demanding phone.
Remember books or magazines aren’t asking anything of you other than to simply enjoy them. As soon as you open your phone you’re going to get roped into a text, or an email, and it could cause you more stress than you realize.
3. Cuddle with your furry friend or loved one
Soooooooo many studies suggest that spending time cuddling or snuggling actually helps to release of all those feel good hormones in your body. What better way to recharge?
4. Dance
I mean, I don’t need any convincing for this one. Dance is like my therapy, but seriously (when you can) blast the tunes and bust a move. You’ll never feel more free.
5. Enjoy a snack (distraction-free)
How many times have you eaten something and not even tasted it?? While it’s of course how we nourish ourselves, food brings a great opportunity for a pleasurable experience. Put the phones away, close the laptop, turn off the TV and enjoy your treat distraction-free.
Might I suggest enjoying a glass of the SunRype Slim Pink Grapefruit bevy? It’s SOOOO yummy, and we also love the Blueberry Burst flavour too.
6. Journal
You’re never more connected with yourself than when you put pen to paper. Even if it’s just a few quick little goals, maybe some free writing about something that is bothering you, or a letter to a loved one.
7. Take a colouring break
Coloring has had a big surge in popularly and I can totally see why it’s one of the easiest ways to tune everything out, and just focus on creating something just for the fun of it. I love coloring because you don’t need any special skills or a big budget anyone can do it!
8. Do a face mask or paint your nails
Vanity aside, taking time to take care of yourself is never a waste of time because it forces you to slow down and that’s never a bad thing! Whether you decide to enjoy that facemask you’ve been wanting to try, or maybe it’s opting for a new nail polish colour, the worlds your oyster!!
9. Look at some old photos
Take a trip down memory lane, and relive some of those old memories. It might actually help remind you about what’s important in life, and help you negotiate putting some work aside.
10. Call a friend
Making time for friends and family is something that is super important to me and to be honest, creeping your friends on Facebook doesn’t mean you understand what’s actually going on in their lives. Social media is a highlight reel and you’re never actually getting the full picture.
Call a friend with zero agenda other than to catch up on what’s going on in their life right now. Ask questions and listen. Remember that not all issues need a resolution. Sometimes an extra set of ears and a “that’s really tough” is enough.
