Adding fat (yup I said it) to your coffee not only makes your morning coffee super frothy and delicious it also has a lot of great health benefits as well. While this version is vegan, you could also try ghee which is a grass fed butter, whatever your choice the addition of coconut oil (or any healthy fat) in combination with your morning cup of joe is a good idea, and here’s why.
Coffee makes us alert (duh), but it also can make us hungry. Yup coffee speeds everything up, so everything in our body pumps harder, better, faster, stronger ultimately suppressing your appetite (for a period), and then the reverse happens, and you ravenous.
While I’ll admit I’m still researching and testing this out for myself I figured I’d share what I know.
Coconut oil is mostly made up of MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides), and some advantages of MCTs include:
- Increases energy expenditure
- Increases metabolic rates
- Improves insulin secretion
- Reduces hunger/suppresses appetite
- Slows down the impact of caffeine
Some have even reported better digestion, smoother skin/ a more radiant complexion, glossier hair, and healthier nails.
I don’t know about you, but that sounds good to me. Research suggests that we should aim to consume no more than 3-5 tablespoons of coconut oil a day and because I use oil for cooking and salad dressings etc I typically add about one tablespoon to my coffee and maybe less depending on the cup (actually I always go for a big cup, who am I kidding?).
Now you do want to blend your coconut oil and coffee in a blender (yep even if it’s hot) because the blender will help to emulsify the coconut oil. Otherwise, it’s just an oily cup of coffee and you’re really missing out on the best part: the froth. If you want something sweet you could try adding a pinch of cinnamon which we know also helps improve your memory, and as well as reduce inflammation, and its a naturally calorie free sweetener. And if that’s not enough for you opt for some raw honey, but I will warn you. Adding something sweet to your coffee at the beginning of the day is kind of a sabotage. Once we get a taste of sugar we tend to crave it all day, so if you can get away from it I’d highly recommend.
While this is the first thing I have in the morning (after a glass of water) and people use it for a breakfast I do still have breakfast after, but it’s just slightly delayed. It does make me feel very satisfied, so I think it would be something great to have on your way or before work, and then have something like a smoothie when you get to your desk.
