You wouldn’t build a house without a solid foundation and you should think of your skincare the same way. If your skin is in bad shape the makeup you put on top of it doesn’t stand a chance.

With a new year upon us you might be thinking about switching up your routine or finally settling into one (hey, no judgments here), but I can fully appreciate that the vast world of skincare is an overwhelming one (even for me and guys, this is my job).

When it comes to skincare it really and truly comes down to science which is why I’m so happy to have teamed up with Shoppers Drug Mart!

What I absolutely love about Shoppers Drug Mart is that not only do they carry an amazing variety of skincare brands and products, but their employees go through rigorous training to be able to sell them.

You really can be confident you’re finding the right product for your needs, which for me, gives me all the confidence in the world when purchasing a product. And let me tell you, a girl can hesitate.

I bet you didn’t know that Shoppers Drug Mart offers free customized skin care consultations?? And I bet you also didn’t know they are equipped with some amazing dermatological tools that can test your moisture levels while their video microscope examines and provides insight in to your skin’s condition and damage from the sun? I KNOW amazing right?? Like where have they been all my life??

In addition to Shoppers Drug Mart’s beauty experts, their pharmacists have the experience and the knowledge that can help you identify areas of concern for your skin and provide product recommendations ranging from skin care, to sun care to vitamins and even supplements.

It’s like the full meal deal! And when it comes to skin health we all know that what goes into our bodies is just as important as what goes on them.

Curious, I popped down to Shoppers Drug Mart on Spring Garden for a skincare consultation with beauty expert Kathleen! Be sure to check out the video and photos below as I take you along.

Whether you’re novice, savvy or guru status we can all stand to learn something new when it comes to skincare!

Vichy Pro Even Night

1. You can always learn something

I would definitely define myself as a knowledgeable person when it comes to skincare and beauty (I read a lot of press releases y’all); however, no matter what level you are at there’s always room for improvement.

I learned SO much from Kathleen, she was an absolute dream to nerd out about skincare with, but also was so thoughtful and considerate.

What I loved is that she wasn’t pushy or judgmental at all. She asked SO many questions, and ultimately let me decide about the direction I wanted to be headed.

2. I didn’t have a day routine.

While my night routine was flawless (her words not mine) I wear contacts so I never go to bed wearing makeup. I have to take my contacts out anyway, and since I’m already there I might as well do my thang. But guys, I had zero routine for the day time!

I try a lot of products, y’all see the blogger mail I get, and while I would never ever complain these products aren’t always customized to my specific skin needs. In fact, sometimes (a lot of times) I’m trying to get my skin back on track after things go wrong lol #bloggerproblems.

Having someone take the time to sit down with me, and focus on my needs and concerns was an absolute delight.

I felt so taken care of, and so spoiled by Kathleen’s kind and considerate nature I think I could have spent the entire day with her! Shoppers Drug Mart carries an amazing amount of brands and products, but I can fully appreciate that it can be overwhelming to figure out what they heck you “should” be using!

3. My hydration level

I’ll be honest I thought I was doing pretty good in the moisture department, well I would be wrong my friends! You see in the video that while not terrible my first reading was 25, but after simply applying some product suggested by Kathleen it quickly jumped to 70! Like how crazy is that?? It just really goes to show how important it is to be putting moisture back into our skin.

Seeing the results of the hydration really reinforced for me the NEED for making sure I’m using products that put moisture back into my skin.

Cleansers, scrubs, and wipes can strip the pH, and while necessary for removing makeup etc it’s not doing much for you in the way of moisture (which is one of your best defenses against visible signs of aging and even breakouts).

4. How my skin has been impacted by sun damage

The really scary thing about sun damage is that we don’t often see it until it’s too late! That is until now. Shoppers currently has some REALLY cool technology that allows you see your skin at a microscopic level. And Kathleen did so well to explain what we were seeing on my skin.

It was really eye opening to see the difference in my skin in areas that are more hidden to the sun, and others that are not.

My chest, for instance was substantially more red than my inner arm, and my neck which really goes to show just how important sunscreen really is!

Wondering what to expect from your skin care consultation? Catch my video diary below:

Since everyone’s skin is unique (I swear it’s like a fingerprint) and as a result has very different needs, it would be difficult for me to suggest products for you. Which is why you should TOTALLY pop into Shoppers Drug Mart for a consult; however, in case you are curious about the products suggested for me I’ve included the full list (with links) for you below!

Biotherm Skin Oxygen Toner

Biotherm Life Plankton Essence

Biotherm Skin Oxygen Strengthening Concentrate

Vichy Thermal 89

Biotherm Blue Therapy Eye Opening Serum (be sure to watch the video to see how to apply) this product also helps your lashes grow. How amazing is that?

Elizabeth Arden Prevage City Smart Tinted SPF 50 Sunscreen (also helps to combat environmental stressors)

Vichy Pro Even Night (to help tackle brown spots and acne scars)

Lise Watier Age Control Supreme Eye

STRIVECTIN Lip Plumping Treatment

Do I NEED to buy something??

There’s no purchase necessary for the Shoppers Drug Mart personalized skin care consults! And you don’t need an appointment either. You can either drop-in or book an appointment (your choice).

If you want a specific time, or say for instance you’re popping in on lunch break it might be best to give a call to book an appointment to ensure that you’re able to be seen. While I think these consults would be amazing for anyone, and likely we should do them twice a year (winter + summer) I think these consults would be AH-MAZING for brides to be.

Because I have a number of friends getting married this summer I think something like this would be perfect for those wanting to get their skin camera ready. Of course, you’re going to want to put in the work, so don’t pop in the day before your wedding looking for miracles. Sometimes our skin gets worse before it gets better, so get in there early, and you won’t regret it.
