EDITORIAL SHOOT: TANGLED UP IN BLUE

Every now and then I feel the urge to flex my creative muscles. While I adore curating content and helping my dearest blog readers navigate their everyday style I also want to push myself and experiment with photography, styling, and directing. A while back I did this editorial style shoot with my photography boo, Alexa Cude. Which psa: she recently JUST launched her stunning website and y’all should check it out.

For this shoot we knew we wanted a minimal striped down aesthetic, so naturally we retreated to a cozy cabin in the woods. Located just along the tumultuous coast of the Lawrencetown beach, the cabin (usually offered up to air bnb’rs in the summer months) was shut up for the winter.

Meaning we had no heat, electricity, or running water (i.e no bathroom breaks) I really shouldn’t opted for the green tea for the drive out. We were roughing’ it on all accounts.

Y’all might not know this, but I actually dabbled in some modeling back in the day (insert embarrassed monkey emoji). I used to work with a vintage company to create their editorial shots for their incredibly well sourced vintage albeit couture items. I’ve worn capes dating back all the way to the 1800s, and horse back ridding trousers from the early-to-mid century. The concept of mimicking a sitting duck is one I’m oh so familiar with, so I relaxed into this shoot with ease. Not to mention Alexa is a gem to work with.

On this bone cold march afternoon I was teleported back to those early days of exploring fashion and am reminded of just how much I love it. From a very young age I’ve always loved fashion. My favorite part of kindergarten was when we got to play dress up (I mean I was there for the learning *wink wink*). Fashion as fickle as it may be I still love it.

And is it any wonder why? Our ability to morph and manipulate ourselves simply by our styles of dress is astounding. Whether you’re choosing fashion as a disguise or armor with fashion we can be all things, and everything all at once. And that my friends is our true freedom of expression.

WHAT I’M WEARING: Tee, c/o Makenew Vintage. Turtleneck, Zara (another option here) Gray Jacket, Frank & Oak. Blue Sweater, H&M. Cream Skirt, Banana Republic. Shoes, Le Chateau. Socks, Forever 21 (similar here). Watch, Bulova. Arrow necklace, Tribe Jewelry.

Hope you feel inspired to go flex your creative muscles.

I can’t wait to see what you come up with.

xx

Kayla
